Rupee Render 6-Frame Image

Description

It didn't take me too long before I thought "hey, let's put lots of shiney things together!!" ...and so it was done.

...to a prompt realization that my rendering times skyrocketed due to every object (a few dozen) having transparency / reflective / refractive properties ^_~.

Originally created on my Athlon XP 1800+ system with 1.5 GB RAM and 3ds Max v4.2 way way way... way back in June of 2004, I figured I'd finally get around to showcasing it online. These particular 6 frames of a 600-frame long (20 second) animation I chose just because they showcase a lot of what goes on and where stuff ends up.

It's not perfect and the rupees I think are still too thin but it's beautiful to watch.

Just to give you an idea, this rendering file has made it through two systems and countless system upgrades so it serves as a very good benchmark for testing against.

Old system is listed above.
Loved AMD at the time but this apparently stressed the system greatly. I remember that I left this rendering while out of town for a couple days and came back to *still* find it plugging away...! It took 4 1/2 days to render so around 108 hours. Frame times were 5 seconds to 35+ minutes.

New system (that I just got a little over a year ago)
Dell XPS410 with Core 2 Duo E6600 2.4 Ghz, 2 GB 667mhz RAM / 1200mhz FSB, and still the same 7,200 RPM HDD. Obviously with two cores it sped up immensely - down to exactly 24 hours!! Frame times were now down to 5 seconds to 18 minutes each. Much improvement.

Did some extremely recent upgrading of the stock system to Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 and a WD 150GB Raptor which benefited the rendering even more. Double the cores and the time's in half about. Down to frames rendering at between 2 seconds and 10 minutes each so I'm impressed.

Pictured in the merged image are (from top left) Frame #s 142, 250, 290, 382, 429, and 600
